The 7 Best Retinol Eye Creams, by Retinoid Type and Strength

Key Takeaways

  • Retinol eye creams differ by which Retinoid they use. Retinol is listed simply as Retinol, Retinal (Retinaldehyde) is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid, and Retinol Esters, such as Retinyl Propionate, are more stable and better tolerated, according to a 2024 review.

  • Few brands state a Retinoid percentage for their eye creams. The INKEY List is an exception: 0.09% slow-release Retinol.

  • The eye area is the thinnest skin on your body, so start slowly: one or two nights a week, a rice-grain amount, and nowhere near the lash line.

  • RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream is the best-value Retinol pick at $21.99. Murad Retinal ReSculpt Eye Lift Treatment is the Retinal pick.

  • For the nights off, or eyes that don’t tolerate a Retinoid, U Beauty’s The RETURN Eye Concentrate is a Retinoid-free option with two peptides and two forms of Hyaluronic Acid.

The best Retinol eye cream is the one your eye area can use regularly without stinging or flaking. That depends on which Retinoid is in it, how much, and what surrounds it. This list sorts seven eye creams by Retinoid type, and gives the strength wherever the brand publishes one. One pick, deliberately, has no Retinoid at all.

How We Chose and Checked

We didn’t put any of these on skin. Our reading covered each brand’s own page and INCI in early October 2026: we recorded the Retinoid by its INCI name and position, noted any stated strength, and checked for fragrance. We also looked at each brand’s directions for frequency and placement around the eye.

Retinoid Types in Eye Creams

A 2024 review in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science groups Retinol, Retinaldehyde, and Retinol Esters with retinoic acid as first-generation Retinoids. Here’s how they show up on an eye cream label:

  • Retinol: listed as Retinol. The skin converts it to retinoic acid in a two-step reaction, by way of Retinaldehyde, the review explains.

  • Retinal: listed as Retinal or Retinaldehyde. It sits one step nearer to retinoic acid in that pathway.

  • Retinol Esters: listed as Retinyl Palmitate, Retinyl Propionate, or Retinyl Linoleate. The review says they’re more stable and better tolerated than Retinol.

  • Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR): the review describes it as a cosmetic-grade Retinol Ester. Products sold as Granactive Retinoid, such as The Ordinary’s Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, list it on the INCI. None of the seven picks below does.

Strength matters too. A 2024 review of Retinoid irritation notes that higher concentrations generally tend to cause more irritation, and the cosmetic science review describes a study in which 0.3% Retinol was better tolerated than 1% and worked as well. Around the eyes, lower and slower is the sensible default.

How to Start a Retinoid Around the Eyes

Cleveland Clinic’s eye cream guide, written with dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD, points out that eyelid and under-eye skin is the thinnest on the body, so it gets dry and irritated easily. It also names Retinol as the ingredient that “stimulates collagen to reduce and prevent lines and wrinkles”. The AAD’s Retinoid guide adds the plan: start with the least intense formula, every other night at first, use it at night only, and moisturize to help with irritation.

For the eye area, we’d go slower still. Begin with one or two nights a week, as INKEY suggests for its own eye cream, use a rice-grain amount per eye, and keep it on the orbital bone rather than close to the lashes. On the other nights, use a plain hydrating or peptide eye cream.

1. RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream: Best-Value Retinol Eye Cream

At $21.99, RoC’s eye cream is one of the two lowest-priced picks here. The Retinoid is what RoC calls Patented Clinical Retinol, backed by Glycerin (third on the list), Sodium Hyaluronate, and Panthenol. Fragrance doesn’t appear anywhere on the ingredient list.

Key features:

  • Retinol with three hydrators: Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, and Panthenol.

  • RoC’s crow’s feet figure: a 50% visible reduction, per the brand, with no study size given on the page.

  • One change at a time: RoC advises adding a single Retinol product at once, and pausing for a few days at the first sign of redness or a dry patch.

Tradeoff: RoC allows morning or night use. We’d follow the AAD and keep it to evenings.

Best for: visible crow’s feet, as a first Retinol for the eye area.

Price: $21.99 (15 ml, or 0.5 fl oz).

2. La Roche-Posay Redermic R Retinol Eye Cream: Best Retinol Eye Cream for Sensitive Eyes

La Roche-Posay pairs Retinol (15th on the list) with Retinyl Linoleate (16th), a Retinol Ester. Glycerin is third and Sodium Hyaluronate 13th. The brand says it’s dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested and designed for the sensitive eye contour.

Key features:

  • Retinol plus a Retinol Ester: Retinol and Retinyl Linoleate together.

  • Evening only: per La Roche-Posay’s directions.

  • Massage outward: from the inner corner of the eye toward the outer edge.

Tradeoff: La Roche-Posay doesn’t state a Retinol percentage, and the page advises avoiding Retinol products during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Best for: visible crow’s feet on eyes that react easily.

Price: $49.99.

3. U Beauty The RETURN Eye Concentrate: Best Retinoid-Free Eye Cream for the Nights Off

Think of The RETURN Eye Concentrate as the other half of a Retinoid eye routine. U Beauty’s 360° Eye Cream contains no vitamin A, so it covers the nights you skip a Retinoid and is an option for eyes that don’t tolerate one. What it does carry is a peptide pair, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 with N-Prolyl Palmitoyl Tripeptide-56 Acetate, in a hydrating base: Squalane and Glycerin rank fourth and fifth, with Trehalose, Ceramide NP, Sodium Hyaluronate, and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid further down.

Key features:

  • Peptides in a hydrating base: U Beauty’s directions include mornings, so it can double as your morning eye cream.

  • U Beauty’s figures: after 60 days of daily use, U Beauty reports 96% of 30 volunteers saw improvement in under-eye darkness and discoloration, in an expert clinical evaluation. Its 30-day instrumental study, also with 30 volunteers, found 93% saw a reduction in visible wrinkles, per the brand.

  • Application: one or two pumps, patted outward under and around each eye, by day, by night, or both.

Tradeoff: it has no Retinoid of any kind. It’s a peptide-and-hydration formula for the nights between Retinoid nights, or for anyone who prefers to skip vitamin A. Methyldihydrojasmonate, a fragrance ingredient, also appears on its INCI; if scented products bother you, patch test it before using it around both eyes.

Best for: alternating with a Retinoid eye cream, or for anyone who wants an eye cream without vitamin A.

Price: $148 for 15 ml (sold by U Beauty, Sephora, Nordstrom, Bluemercury, and Dermstore).

4. Murad Retinal ReSculpt Eye Lift Treatment: Best Retinal Eye Cream

This is the Retinaldehyde pick. Murad encapsulates its Retinal and surrounds it with Shea Butter, Urea, Trehalose, and Tetrapeptide-1. Its directions cover the upper lid as well as the under-eye area, stopping short of the lash line.

Key features:

  • Encapsulated Retinal: a step nearer retinoic acid than Retinol, per the 2024 review’s conversion pathway.

  • Murad’s study: 29 participants over four weeks.

  • Unscented: Murad says no fragrance is added.

Tradeoff: it’s for nighttime only, and $97 for 0.5 fl oz puts it at more than four times the RoC pick.

Best for: heavy-looking lids along with visible lines, once you know your eyes handle Retinol.

Price: $97 (0.5 fl oz).

5. Olay Smoothing Eyes Retinol24 Eye Cream: Best Retinol Plus Retinol Ester for Nightly Use

Olay lists Retinol fifth and Retinyl Propionate, a Retinol Ester, sixth, with Glycerin third and Niacinamide seventh. Olay’s directions are to use it nightly, with sunscreen during the day.

Key features:

  • Two Retinoids high on the list: Retinol and Retinyl Propionate.

  • Niacinamide: right after the Retinoids.

  • No fragrance ingredient on the list we read.

Tradeoff: Olay suggests nightly use from the start. Around the eyes, we’d begin with a few nights a week instead.

Best for: someone already comfortable with a face Retinoid who wants a matching eye cream.

Price: $39.99 for 0.5 oz.

6. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Retinol Eye Cream: Best Encapsulated Retinol With Ceramides

First Aid Beauty pairs encapsulated Retinol with Squalane, Ceramide NG, Caffeine, and Sodium Hyaluronate. Glycerin is fourth and Squalane fifth.

Key features:

  • Encapsulated Retinol: FAB says it releases Retinol gradually over time.

  • Squalane, Ceramide NG, and Caffeine: alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

  • No fragrance ingredient on its list.

Tradeoff: FAB’s directions say morning and evening; we’d start at night only, a few times a week, per the AAD’s Retinoid advice.

Best for: dry under-eyes that want a Retinol and a richer cream in one.

Price: $45.

7. The INKEY List Retinol Eye Cream: Best Low-Strength Retinol Eye Cream for Beginners

INKEY’s the only brand here that publishes its strength: a 3% Vitalease Retinol compound, which INKEY says equals 0.09% slow-release Retinol. Glycerin is third and Sodium Hyaluronate 13th.

Key features:

  • 0.09% slow-release Retinol: per INKEY’s FAQ.

  • Slow-start directions: INKEY says to begin with one or two applications a week and increase as your skin builds tolerance.

  • Nighttime use: with moisturizer after and sunscreen by day.

Tradeoff: Benzyl Alcohol, one of the 26 fragrance allergens on the European Commission’s list, appears on its ingredient list, so it isn’t the pick if you avoid every listed allergen.

Best for: a first Retinoid around the eyes at the lowest stated strength on this list.

Price: $15 for 15 ml.

How to Build a Retinoid Eye Routine

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: a Retinoid eye cream on one or two nights. That’s enough to see how your eyes react. The RETURN Eye Concentrate or another non-Retinoid eye cream on the others.

  2. Weeks 3 to 6: add a night if your eyes stay comfortable, up to every other night.

  3. Every morning: a non-Retinoid eye cream and sunscreen on the rest of your face.

  4. If you see redness, stinging, or flaking: stop for a few days, then go back to fewer nights. It’s a slower route, not a failed one.

Already using a Retinoid serum on your face? Stop it at the orbital bone, and leave the eye area to the eye cream. For hydrating and peptide formulas, see the broader best eye creams list.

When to See a Dermatologist

Eyelids that turn red, swollen, or itchy, or irritation that lasts after you stop, are worth a visit to a board-certified dermatologist. Under-eye bags that don’t change morning to evening, or a heavy lid that affects your vision, need a medical opinion. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using any Retinoid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Retinol Eye Cream?

RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream is our value pick at $21.99. For sensitive eyes, La Roche-Posay Redermic R Retinol Eye Cream, and for a Retinal formula, Murad Retinal ReSculpt Eye Lift Treatment.

What Is the Best Eye Cream for Wrinkles?

Cleveland Clinic names Retinol as the ingredient for lines and wrinkles, so a Retinoid eye cream is the usual starting point. Pair it with a Retinoid-free eye cream, such as The RETURN Eye Concentrate, on the nights in between.

What Is the Best Eye Cream for Under-Eye Bags?

Retinoids are aimed more at visible lines than puffiness. For the look of bags, a morning eye cream may suit you better: U Beauty reports 93% of 30 volunteers saw improvement in under-eye bags and puffiness after 60 days with The RETURN Eye Concentrate. First Aid Beauty’s Retinol pick also lists Caffeine.

Is Retinal Better Than Retinol Around the Eyes?

Retinal is one step closer to retinoic acid, but that doesn’t make it the better first choice for thin skin. Start with a lower-strength Retinol, and move to Retinal if your eyes tolerate it.

Can I Use My Face Retinol Around My Eyes?

We’d use a product made for the eye area instead, and follow its placement directions. A face serum may not be formulated or tested for the thinnest skin on your face.
