Key Takeaways
A Retinol cream may help crepey-looking skin after weight loss look smoother over months, mostly by working on the sun-related side of the problem. It won’t take up loose skin.
Our top pick for the upper arms is The SCULPT Arm Compound from U Beauty, which pairs Retinol with Caffeine and Superoxide Dismutase.
For all-over use, Paula’s Choice and Nécessaire both put 0.1% Retinol on the label of their body treatments.
A Retinoid routine works better with support: a Urea lotion for rough patches, a plain moisturizer to buffer dryness, and a body sunscreen for the morning.
Very dry skin comes first. The American Academy of Dermatology lists Retinoids among the ingredients to stop using while skin is very dry.
Does Retinol Help Crepey Skin After Weight Loss?
It may, within limits. Crepey-looking skin after weight loss has two parts: volume, because stretched skin may not fully retract, and surface quality, meaning how thin, crinkled, and dull the skin looks. Retinol has a plausible role in the second part and very little in the first.
That’s why this list has two halves. The first three entries are Retinol body treatments. The last three are the products that make a Retinoid routine easier to keep up on large areas of dry skin.
Where the Retinoid Evidence Comes From
The clearest trial data is for prescription Tretinoin. A 2022 systematic review of seven randomized controlled trials, with 739 participants, found it improved the look of wrinkling, mottled pigment, and sallowness. Nearly all of that was on the face; one trial treated the forearms.
Over-the-counter options are gentler, and that’s the trade you make on the body. A 2026 photoaging review in the Annals of Dermatology says Retinol, Retinaldehyde, and retinyl esters “similarly provide benefits in reducing fine wrinkles, with less erythema and irritation compared to tretinoin.” That lower irritation matters on the body, where you’re covering far more skin than a face.
The weight-loss link runs through sun. Dermatologist Lindsey Bordone told Medscape in November 2025 that weight loss accentuates the wrinkled look of sun-damaged skin, which is the kind of skin Retinoid trials were built around. We didn’t find a trial of any Retinoid on skin that loosened after weight loss, so expectations should come from the sun-exposure research and stay modest.
Timing matters too. The AAD’s dry-skin advice lists Retinoids among the ingredients to stop while skin is very dry, and weight loss and dryness often come together. Cleveland Clinic says it takes several weeks to see an improvement from Retinol, and that it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
How We Compared These Products
We didn’t test these products hands-on. We read each brand’s product page and ingredient list in September 2026 and compared the Retinoid (and its stated strength, where given), the rest of the formula, fragrance, the brand’s directions, any published study figures and price per size.
1. U Beauty The SCULPT Arm Compound: Best Retinol Treatment for the Upper Arms
Upper arms are often where crepey-looking skin shows first after weight loss, and The SCULPT Arm Compound is made for that zone alone. U Beauty calls it a “Gravity-Defying Arm Treatment.” It’s specifically designed for the unique skin on the arms, which has very few sebaceous glands, and it pairs Retinol with Caffeine, Superoxide Dismutase, Glycerin, Grape Seed Oil, and two forms of Hyaluronic Acid, all powered by proprietary SIREN Capsule Technology™.
It goes on clean, dry skin in the morning, at night, or both, which makes it easier to fit around a Retinoid routine than a night-only treatment. The result is arms that look visibly smoother and more sculpted, and feel nourished and elastic.
Key features:
Retinol with Caffeine and Superoxide Dismutase: Retinol, Caffeine, and Superoxide Dismutase in one arm treatment.
Published study figures: U Beauty reports that 90% of 30 volunteers agreed it visibly improved sagging, crepey-looking skin in a consumer perception study after 30 days of consistent twice-daily use, and that 96% saw improved skin elasticity in an independent 30-volunteer instrumental study after 30 days of consistent use.
Built for a routine: The brand suggests applying it over the Resurfacing Body Compound and beneath The SUPER Body Hydrator.
Tradeoff: It’s an arm treatment by design; its FAQ says it’s best suited to more fragile areas rather than thicker skin on the stomach or legs. It also lists Methyldihydrojasmonate, a fragrance ingredient.
Best for: crepey-looking, visibly loose upper arms after weight loss.
Price: $98 for 120 ml.
2. Paula’s Choice Retinol Skin-Smoothing Body Treatment: Best 0.1% Retinol Lotion for Neck-Down Use
Paula’s Choice describes this as a body lotion with a mid-strength 0.1% Retinol concentration, antioxidants, and natural butters and plant oils. It’s meant for smoothing from the neck down, either all over or as a spot treatment.
Key features:
A stated strength: 0.1% Retinol, which most body lotions don’t disclose.
Flexible use: Daily all over, or only where you want it.
An easy way to dial it down: Paula’s Choice says to cut back, or blend it with a Retinol-free body lotion, if skin gets irritated.
Tradeoff: A 4 fl oz bottle doesn’t go far on two legs, and Paula’s Choice showed it as sold out when we looked in late September.
Best for: crinkly-looking skin on the chest, arms, and legs, once dryness has settled.
Price: $37 for 4 fl oz.
3. Nécessaire The Body Retinol: Best Night Treatment With a Stated Strength
Nécessaire’s Body Retinol is a nighttime body treatment with 0.1% pure encapsulated Retinol. Its directions build slowly, from once a week up to every other night, which suits skin that’s just come through a stretch of dryness.
Key features:
0.1% encapsulated Retinol: Stated on the product page.
Published study figures: Nécessaire reports that 85% of panelists reported visibly less crepiness in a consumer perception study of more than 30 people over 4 weeks.
Fragrance free: The brand lists it as fragrance free, dermatologist tested, and hypoallergenic.
Tradeoff: It’s for night use only, the brand says visible results may take as long as 90 days, and it asks for SPF the next day.
Best for: a gradual, all-over Retinol routine on the body.
Price: $65 for 150 ml.
4. Eucerin Roughness Relief Lotion: Best Urea Lotion to Pair With Retinol
Eucerin’s Roughness Relief Lotion is built around a Triple Moisturizing Complex of 10% Urea, Ceramide, and Natural Moisturizing Factors, with Urea second on its ingredient list. It’s the lotion for nights you skip the Retinoid.
Key features:
10% Urea: Enough to hydrate and help rough, bumpy-looking skin look smoother.
Fragrance free: Also paraben free and dye free.
Daily use: Eucerin’s direction is to smooth it over skin every day.
Tradeoff: It’s a lotion rather than a thick cream, so the driest spots may want more on top.
Best for: rough, bumpy-looking thighs and upper arms between Retinol nights.
Price: varies by retailer, in a 16.9 fl oz bottle.
5. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: Best Moisturizer to Buffer a Retinoid
A plain, rich moisturizer helps a Retinoid routine stay comfortable, and CeraVe’s cream is the widely sold standard. It lists Ceramide NP, AP, and EOP with Cholesterol, Petrolatum, and Sodium Hyaluronate.
Key features:
Three named Ceramides: In a Petrolatum-based cream.
Independent acceptance: It’s accepted by the National Eczema Association.
Face and body, day or night: Apply as often as needed.
Tradeoff: It has no Retinoid or exfoliating acid, so it’s the support act rather than the treatment.
Best for: layering over a Retinol body treatment, or on its own when skin feels tight.
Price: $14.99.
6. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60: Best Body Sunscreen for a Retinol Routine
Retinol can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so a body sunscreen isn’t an optional extra here. La Roche-Posay’s Melt-In Milk is a broad-spectrum SPF 60 for face and body, with Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, and Octocrylene 7% as its active ingredients and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water in the base.
Key features:
Water resistant for 80 minutes: The label says to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, and at least every 2 hours.
A large bottle for the body: It comes in 150 ml and 90 ml sizes.
Skin Cancer Foundation recommendation: La Roche-Posay says the foundation recommends it.
Tradeoff: Alcohol Denat. appears on its inactive ingredient list, and it uses chemical filters, which some reactive skin prefers to avoid.
Best for: arms and legs in daylight while you use a Retinoid.
Price: $37.99 for 150 ml.
How to Use a Retinol Cream After Weight Loss
Settle dryness first: It’s worth a few weeks on a Urea lotion or rich moisturizer if skin feels tight or itchy.
Start slowly: The AAD suggests the least-intense Retinoid, every other night at first, building up gradually.
Apply to clean, dry skin in the evening, then moisturize over it if skin feels dry.
Alternate with acids: If you’re also using a Urea or AHA body lotion, use them on different nights at first.
Cover bare skin by day: The AAD’s sunscreen guidance asks for broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, and it names the legs as a spot people forget.
Skip Retinoids in pregnancy: Cleveland Clinic notes that healthcare providers discourage them.

When to See a Dermatologist
If loose skin is chafing, staying moist in folds or looking irritated, see a board-certified dermatologist. They can also talk you through prescription Retinoids or procedures if a cream isn’t enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Best Retinol Cream for Crepey Skin After Weight Loss?
For the upper arms, The SCULPT Arm Compound from U Beauty is designed for that zone. For the legs and torso, Paula’s Choice Retinol Skin-Smoothing Body Treatment and Nécessaire The Body Retinol both list 0.1% Retinol.
Should I Start Retinol While I’m Still Losing Weight?
You can, if your skin isn’t dry or irritated. Waiting until skin feels comfortable is also reasonable, since the AAD suggests pausing Retinoids on very dry skin.
Can I Use Retinol With a Urea Lotion?
Usually, yes. Urea may help with dryness and rough-looking texture. If skin stings, use them on alternate nights.
Is Tretinoin Better Than Retinol for the Body?
Tretinoin has more trial data, almost all on the face. Over-the-counter Retinol tends to cause less redness and irritation, which matters when you’re treating large areas. A dermatologist can advise on prescription options.
How Long Does Retinol Take to Work on Crepey Skin?
Several weeks for a visible change, according to Cleveland Clinic, and the brands here report results at 4 weeks to 90 days.
