The 7 Best Fragrance-Free Skincare Products: Cleanser, Serum, Retinoid, Moisturizer, and Eye Cream

Key Takeaways
“Fragrance-free” has no federal definition in the US, the FDA says, and some products labeled “unscented” still contain fragrance ingredients. The ingredient list is the most reliable check.
Scan the INCI for three things: the words “Fragrance” or “Parfum”, any essential oil, and named allergens, such as Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Geraniol, and Benzyl Alcohol.
Every product below was checked against its full ingredient list, or the brand’s fragrance-free statement where the full list isn’t published.
For a performance luxury serum without fragrance, U Beauty’s The SMOOTH Dynamic Wrinkle Defense Serum lists no fragrance ingredient, and it carries two Retinol Esters and several peptides.
Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturizer is the fragrance-free Retinoid pick at $39.99.
The best fragrance-free skincare is the kind you’ve checked yourself, because the words on the front of a bottle don’t settle it. The FDA notes there’s no federal standard for “fragrance-free”, “hypoallergenic”, or “for sensitive skin”. This list covers a whole routine, from cleanser to eye cream, and says for each product what its label does and doesn’t list.
How We Checked These Products
We didn’t test anything on skin for this list. Instead, we went through each brand’s page and complete INCI in early October 2026, searching each one for fragrance, Parfum, essential oils, and the 26 fragrance allergens the European Commission lists. Where a brand doesn’t publish its full list, we say so and rely on its own fragrance-free statement. We also looked at where each product fits in a Retinoid routine.
Reading an INCI for Fragrance, Parfum, and Allergens
The FDA’s page on fragrances in cosmetics says fragrance ingredients can be listed simply as “Fragrance”, and that “even some products labeled ‘unscented’ may contain fragrance ingredients”. So scan the INCI for three things:
”Fragrance” or “Parfum”. One word that can stand for a blend of many ingredients.
Essential oils. Usually listed by plant name with “oil” after it, such as a peel oil or a flower oil. “Essential oils” isn’t a regulated term either, per the FDA; people commonly use the term for certain oils extracted from plants.
Named fragrance allergens. An FDA page on cosmetic allergens carries the European Commission’s list of 26 fragrance ingredients identified as allergens, including Citral, Citronellol, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Eugenol, Coumarin, and Benzyl Alcohol. The FDA also notes these may not be named on a US label when they’re part of a fragrance blend. Some of them turn up in formulas for other reasons, so a single entry is a reason to patch test, not proof the product is scented.
The AAD’s dry-skin advice adds a labeling tip: choose products marked “fragrance-free” over “unscented”, because a product sold as unscented may include masking chemicals that cover the odor of its other ingredients.
A product with no fragrance can still irritate. Plant extracts, preservatives, and active ingredients like Retinoids can all do that. Before a new product goes on your whole face, the AAD’s advice is a patch test: apply it to one small area twice daily, for seven to 10 days.
1. Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser: Best Fragrance-Free Cleanser
Vanicream’s face wash has 12 ingredients. After water and Glycerin, Coco-Glucoside and Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate do the cleaning. The brand says it contains no fragrance, no botanical extracts, and no essential oils, and it’s sulfate-free and soap-free.
Key features:
Short list: 12 entries, none of them a fragrance or a plant extract.
Mild surfactants: Coco-Glucoside and Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate.
NEA Seal: Vanicream says it carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.
Tradeoff: Vanicream says waterproof makeup can take a second wash.
Best for: a cleanser that adds nothing new to a routine already built around a Retinoid.
Price: varies by retailer (8 oz and 2.5 oz).
2. U Beauty The SMOOTH Dynamic Wrinkle Defense Serum: Best Performance Luxury Serum Without Fragrance
We went through all 60 entries on the INCI of The SMOOTH Dynamic Wrinkle Defense Serum, U Beauty’s serum for visible fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. None is Fragrance or Parfum, none is an essential oil, and none matches the European Commission’s allergen list. What’s there instead: Glycerin in second place, Squalane in fourth, a pair of Retinol Esters, and a peptide blend.
Key features:
Vitamin A without fragrance: Retinyl Linoleate and Retinyl Palmitate, both Retinol Esters.
Four named peptides: Copper Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-5 Diaminobutyroyl Hydroxythreonine, and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8.
An expert-graded figure: U Beauty reports 70% of 30 volunteers showed a visible improvement in wrinkles when graded 15 minutes after first use.
Twice a day: one or two pumps, pressed upward over the face and neck.
Tradeoff: at $248 it’s the priciest pick here, and the formula includes plant extracts, such as Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract. They aren’t fragrance entries, but very reactive skin should still patch test.
Best for: anyone who wants performance luxury for visible fine lines without a scent.
Price: $248 for 30 ml, from U Beauty and through Sephora, Nordstrom, Bluemercury, and Dermstore.
3. Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturizer: Best Fragrance-Free Retinoid Moisturizer
Olay’s night cream is the Retinoid pick. It combines two Retinoids, Retinol and Retinyl Propionate (a Retinol Ester), with Niacinamide and three peptides. Its full ingredient list shows no fragrance ingredient.
Key features:
Retinol plus a Retinol Ester: both high on the list, with Glycerin third.
Peptides and Niacinamide: Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Tripeptide-3, and Palmitoyl Dipeptide-7.
Night only: Olay says to use it nightly and apply sunscreen the next morning.
Tradeoff: Retinoids can irritate whether or not there’s fragrance in the jar, so start a few nights a week.
Best for: a Retinoid and moisturizer in one step at night.
Price: $39.99.
4. Avène Tolérance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream: Best Minimal-Ingredient Moisturizer
Avène’s cream has a complete list of 15 ingredients, with Glycerin fourth and Squalane sixth, and no fragrance among them. Avène’s directions cover the face, neck, and eye contour, twice a day.
Key features:
Short list: with 15 entries, it’s easier to trace a reaction.
Eye contour use: per Avène’s directions.
No fragrance: none of its 15 entries is a fragrance ingredient or a named allergen.
Tradeoff: $40 for 1.3 fl oz is a high per-ounce price for a minimal formula.
Best for: skin that’s reacting to almost everything, including on Retinoid nights.
Price: $40 for 1.3 fl oz.
5. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer: Best Fragrance-Free Ceramide Moisturizer
Vanicream’s face moisturizer lists Squalane, Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, and five Ceramides, and like the cleanser, it carries the National Eczema Association Seal, per Vanicream.

Five Ceramides: NP, NG, AP, AS, and EOP on one list.
Squalane and Hyaluronic Acid: an emollient and a humectant together.
Day or night: Vanicream says to apply as needed.

Best for: a daily moisturizer under sunscreen, or over a Retinoid at night.
Price: varies by retailer.
6. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel Cream Fragrance Free: Best Lightweight Humectant Gel
The fragrance-free version of Neutrogena’s gel cream lists Glycerin second and Sodium Hyaluronate further down, along with Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Urea, and Trehalose. Neutrogena labels it fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free, and aims it at normal to dry skin.
Key features:
Several humectants: Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium PCA, Sodium Lactate, Urea, and Trehalose.
Gel cream texture: a gel cream rather than a classic cream.
Check the label: the original Hydro Boost Water Gel lists Fragrance, so make sure you pick up the Fragrance Free version.
Tradeoff: if your skin feels dry after a Retinoid, a cream, such as pick 4 or 5, may suit those nights better.
Best for: normal to dry skin that prefers a lighter gel cream.
Price: varies by retailer (1.7 fl oz).
7. CeraVe Eye Repair Cream: Best Fragrance-Free Eye Cream
It’s the simplest eye step here. CeraVe’s eye cream lists Niacinamide second, then Glycerin, three Ceramides, Sodium Hyaluronate, and Cholesterol. CeraVe says it’s fragrance-free, ophthalmologist-tested, and accepted by the National Eczema Association.
Key features:
Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid: for dry-feeling skin around the eyes.
Ophthalmologist-tested: per CeraVe.
Once or twice a day: small dots around the eye area.
Tradeoff: there’s no Retinoid or peptide here, so it’s a hydrator rather than a fine-line treatment.
Best for: the gentlest eye step, on Retinoid nights or any other.
Price: $19.99.
What About Sunscreen?
You’ll want sunscreen in any routine, and more so if you use a Retinoid. We haven’t ranked one here. Read sunscreen labels the same way, checking the inactive ingredients for Fragrance and the allergens above. Our roundup of mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin compares options.
How to Build a Fragrance-Free Routine
Cleanse with pick 1, morning and night.
Treat with pick 2 in the morning or evening, or pick 3 at night.
Moisturize with pick 4, 5, or 6.
Eye area with pick 7.
Add one product at a time, with a patch test first, so you can tell what’s behind any reaction.
When to See a Dermatologist
If your skin keeps reacting after you’ve removed fragrance, see a board-certified dermatologist. A rash that keeps coming back may be allergic contact dermatitis, and patch testing can show what you’re reacting to, which might be a preservative or a plant extract rather than fragrance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Best Fragrance-Free Moisturizer?
Avène Tolérance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream wins on simplicity, at 15 ingredients. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer adds five Ceramides, and Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturizer adds a Retinoid.
What Is the Best Luxury Skincare for Sensitive Skin?
If fragrance is your trigger, U Beauty’s The SMOOTH Dynamic Wrinkle Defense Serum lists no fragrance ingredient. Patch test any new product, whatever its price.
What Products Should I Use if I Have Sensitive Skin?
Start with three steps: wash with a mild cleanser, moisturize with something fragrance-free, and finish mornings with sunscreen. Bring in a Retinoid or serum one product at a time.
Is “Unscented” the Same as Fragrance-Free?
Not necessarily. According to the AAD, an “unscented” product may contain masking chemicals, and the FDA says some contain fragrance ingredients.
Are Essential Oils Fragrance?
The FDA says there’s no regulatory definition for “essential oils”. Many are used for their scent, so if you’re avoiding fragrance, treat an essential oil on an INCI as a reason to patch test.
